Improving educational outcomes by upgrading infrastructure at Solomon Island primary and secondary schools
Overview
VINE’s Capacity Building Solomon Islands project has a heart for creating opportunity and building pathways out of poverty through improved educational outcomes in the Solomon Islands.
VINE’s vision includes investment in key infrastructure and learning facilities which, in the long-term, will, directly and indirectly, impact a significant proportion of the population.
In partnership with World Relief Australia, VINE Communities continues to support a wide range of initiatives across various educational institutions including:
- Provision of a multi-purpose, steel Community Centre in 2021 which will also act as a dining room, kitchen and sports centre for Kukum High school, in central Honiara.
- Installation of a 100K litre water tank to complete previous investments in a series of 10 catchment tanks and pump station at Jones College – 2021 project depending on Covid.
- Distribution of 1000’s of library books and teaching resources throughout key primary and secondary schools – ongoing.
- Completion of a swing bridge to facilitate access at Kukudu College campus.
- Provision of tertiary education scholarships for key personnel – 2 MA students completed.
- Facilitate training of nationals and provision of dental services via mobile dental clinics for the Honiara General Hospital and possibly other places, the first unit is now being used at the hospital.
- We have built ablution blocks at Tenakoga and Puzavai High schools, a new library at Tenakoga, equipped with a carpentry joinery workshop at Kukudu High School, installed generators in schools, and rewired several schools.
- Taught and teaching locals to paint HAPPY ROOMS in schools, churches, and homes to create a pleasant environment as well as providing paint for classrooms and homes, etc
- Improved agricultural production and methods at Tenakoga High school.
- Installed tanks and electric pumps at Tenakoga and Jones Colleges to provide water for the schools. Provided two tractors (Puzavai and Kukudu schools) with equipment such as slashers, ploughs etc to provide agricultural support.
- Provided a reconditioned Gardener Marine diesel engine and parts for the Varivato ship.
- Supplying hundreds of desks and chairs for classrooms
- Inspection, maintenance/repair of previous projects

- Improved infrastructure: generators and electrical supplies, ablution facilities, library books and shelving desks and chairs
- Ongoing maintenance: parts for equipment
- Professional development / support / monitoring of educators
- Regular curriculum upgrades
